Walk into the SAT thinking every question is new and the test feels bottomless. It isn't. The College Board builds every form from the same published set of question types, in the same proportions, testing the same handful of skills. The questions change; the types don't. That's the single most useful thing to know before you study, because it turns a vague fear ("what if I get something weird?") into a finite checklist you can actually work through.
There are no surprise questions on the SAT. There are only types you've seen and types you haven't looked up yet. This page is the list.
Why naming the type is half the battle
When you recognize a question type on sight, you stop reading cold and start reading for something specific. A Words in Context question means "find the word the sentence is actually asking for, before you look at the choices." A Command of Evidence question means "match the claim to the exact line that proves it." The type tells you the move. Skip that step and every question becomes a fresh puzzle solved from scratch, which is slower and far easier to trap. Learn the menu and you walk in already knowing the play for whatever comes up.
Reading & Writing question types
Every R&W question is one short passage and one question, sorted into four domains. Here's the full set, with what each type is really asking:
Reading & Writing looks like “English,” but it's really eleven tiny, separate games. Some are pure logic, some are grammar rules, one is just vocabulary. Play each by its own rules.
Information and Ideas — can you find and use what the text says?
- Central Ideas and Details: the main point of the passage, or a specific fact inside it.
- Command of Evidence (Textual): which quote best supports a given claim.
- Command of Evidence (Quantitative): read a graph or table and pick the choice the data supports.
- Inferences: the conclusion the passage points to without stating it outright.
Craft and Structure — can you handle how the text is built?
- Words in Context: the meaning a word takes on in this specific sentence.
- Text Structure and Purpose: why a sentence or passage is written the way it is.
- Cross-Text Connections: how two short passages relate, agree, or argue.
Expression of Ideas — can you make writing clearer and more effective?
- Rhetorical Synthesis: use bullet-point notes to hit a stated writing goal.
- Transitions: the logical connector (however, therefore, for example) the sentences actually call for.
Standard English Conventions — do you know the grammar rules?
- Boundaries: punctuation and where one sentence stops and the next begins.
- Form, Structure, and Sense: verbs, agreement, pronouns, and modifiers.
Math question types
Math sorts into four domains too. The content barely passes Algebra 2, so the challenge is recognizing which tool a problem wants and applying it cleanly under time. Each link below breaks the domain into its specific question types:
- Algebra: linear equations, systems, functions, and inequalities. The biggest single slice of the Math section.
- Advanced Math: nonlinear functions, quadratics, exponentials, and equivalent expressions.
- Problem-Solving and Data Analysis: ratios, percentages, rates, probability, and reading statistics.
- Geometry and Trigonometry: area and volume, angles and triangles, right-triangle trig, and circles.
Caw. Naming the type is step one, not the fix. Each type comes with its own favorite wrong answer, and knowing the label doesn't mean you'll dodge the trap. That part you have to drill.
Recognizing a question type is a huge head start, and it's not the whole job.
