The fall SAT crowd splits cleanly into two tribes, and both of them are doing it wrong. Tribe one treats summer as a sacred no-thinking zone, touches nothing until two weeks before the August or October test, then spends those two weeks in a controlled panic. Tribe two, terrified of becoming tribe one, swings the other way: a brutal six-hours-a-day July boot camp that ends in burnout, resentment, and a deep loathing of the word "Bluebook" by the second week.
Neither gets the actual prize, which is this: summer is the only stretch of the year when you have enough time to fix the things that can't be crammed. Spend it right and you walk into fall already most of the way there. Spend it wrong and you're just tribe one with extra steps.
What summer is actually for
Here's the thing two-week crammers can never buy at any price: the slow-cooking skills. Reading dense, unfamiliar passages without your brain fogging over. Building enough vocabulary that "words in context" questions stop ambushing you. Getting math fundamentals so automatic that you're spending your brainpower on the problem instead of remembering how fractions work. None of that responds to a frantic sprint. All of it responds, beautifully, to a couple of unhurried months.
This is the whole strategic point of a summer. Save the cheap, fast, rule-based stuff — grammar, punctuation, test-day mechanics — for closer to the test, when a quick drill genuinely moves the needle. Use the long runway for the one thing a runway is good for: building the skills that need time to set, like concrete. The student who reads real, hard things all summer will out-score the student who memorized comma rules in a weekend, every time.
Cram the things that respond to cramming later. Use the months you have now for the things that only respond to months. Reading is the headliner.
A sane weekly rhythm
You do not need to study six hours a day. You need to study like someone who plans to still be standing in October. Consistency beats intensity here by a mile — a brain fed steadily over ten weeks retains far more than one force-fed over ten days, and there's actual science behind that. A realistic week looks more like this:
- Three or four focused sessions, 60–90 minutes each. Focused means phone in another room, not "studying" with Netflix on in the corner. Ninety honest minutes beats four distracted hours.
- Read something real, most days, for fun. Twenty minutes of a genuinely hard article, essay, or book — the kind with arguments and unfamiliar words — does more for your Reading score over a summer than another worksheet. - Review your misses every single time. The hour after a practice test, spent reconstructing why you got each wrong one wrong, is the highest-return hour in your whole summer. Skipping it turns a practice test into expensive anxiety.
Diagnose before you grind
The fastest way to waste a summer is to study hard in the wrong direction. Ten weeks is a long time to spend drilling vocabulary when your real leak was pacing all along. So before you build a plan, find out where your points are actually going. Take a real diagnostic, sort your misses by how they went wrong rather than which topic they covered, and aim the summer at the pattern that keeps showing up. Studying with a map beats studying with stamina.

Protect the summer, too
One honest caution, since the boot-camp tribe needs to hear it: a summer is also for being seventeen. Burnout is real, it's counterproductive, and a kid who hates studying by August will quietly sabotage themselves on test day. Take days fully off. Keep the sessions short and sharp rather than long and miserable. The goal is to arrive in the fall both prepared and not sick of the whole thing — and the second half of that matters more than stressed students believe.
The bottom line
Summer is a cheat code, and the cheat is simply this: you have time, so use it on what time is uniquely good for. Build the reading. Set the fundamentals. Diagnose your real leaks early and aim the months at them. Save the quick fixes for the home stretch, sleep like it's your job, and don't set yourself on fire in July. Do that, and August-you will be deeply, smugly grateful.
