Maybe — and we admire your nerve — it's three days. The advice below scales down for all of them, because it's built on the same idea: when time is short, you don't study more, you study only the things that pay.
Most last-minute panic gets wasted on the wrong stuff entirely. People reread their whole textbook, do forty random problems, and watch four hours of strategy videos that mostly tell them to "stay calm and read carefully." That's not a plan. That's a fancier way of panicking. Here's a real one.
The bad news first, so the good news lands harder
Let's get the uncomfortable part out of the way. The single biggest lever on your Reading score — actually understanding dense, unfamiliar passages quickly — is the one thing you cannot meaningfully fake in two weeks. Reading ability is built over years, the boring way, by reading hard things. No miracle drill installs it overnight. If your real problem is that the passages feel like they're written in fog, no amount of cramming dissolves the fog by Saturday.
This is exactly the lie the "+200 points in a weekend!" crowd is selling, and it's worth naming so you stop wasting your precious days chasing it. So don't spend your two weeks trying to rebuild a skill that took everyone else years. Spend them on the points you're currently throwing away — and there are more of those than you think.
With two weeks left, your job is not to get smarter. Your job is to stop bleeding points you already know how to keep — the blanks, the careless grammar misses, the time you run out of, the same trap you fall for every time.
Where the free points are actually hiding
"Free" is doing some work in that sentence, but not much. These are points you can recover in days, not years, because they don't depend on becoming a better reader. They depend on plugging leaks.
1. The grammar and punctuation rules. Drill these first.
Roughly half of the Reading and Writing section is rule-based: commas, semicolons, colons, subject-verb agreement, pronouns, modifiers, transitions. These are not matters of taste or talent. They are a finite, knowable list — small enough to genuinely learn in a week and have stick. 2. Never, ever leave a question blank.
The digital SAT does not subtract points for wrong answers. A blank and a wrong guess are worth exactly the same thing: zero. So a blank is just a guess you were too polite to make. A wild guess has a one-in-four shot at a free point; a blank has none. If you take nothing else from this article, take this: with one minute left, machine-gun a letter into every empty box. 3. Running out of time is a triage problem, not a speed problem.
If you regularly don't finish, your instinct is to read faster. Resist it — reading faster mostly means reading worse, and you'll trade unfinished questions for finished-but-wrong ones. The fix is triage. The questions are not in difficulty order, so a brutal one and a gift one are worth identical points. When the clock is tight, bank the easy ones first and don't let a single stubborn problem eat four minutes it was never worth. Practiced even a few times, that one habit rescues more points than another month of "reading faster" ever could.
4. Re-do your own misses. This is the cheapest tutor in the world.
Here's the highest-return hour in all of test prep, and it costs nothing: take an official practice test, then spend most of your remaining time not on new questions but on the ones you got wrong. For each miss, don't just nod at the right answer. Reconstruct the exact moment you went off the rails — what you thought the question was asking, why the wrong choice looked so reasonable, whether you'd catch it next time or walk into it again. 5. Stop trusting the "never change your first answer" rule.
This one's folklore, repeated so often it feels like physics. The data on changed answers is a lot messier than the rule admits: plenty of students rescue far more answers by switching than they ruin. Before you commit to "always trust your gut," check your own evidence. Go back through your practice tests and count: when you changed an answer, how often did you change it to the right one versus away from it? Follow what your own paper tells you, not what your nervous friend swears by.
When we watch real students work transition questions (however, therefore, granted, that is, in fact…), the problem is almost never that they don't know the words. They know the loud, obvious ones cold. What goes wrong is subtler: they flatten precise relationships into blunt ones — bulldozing a concession like "granted" into plain old "however," or a restatement like "that is" into "therefore." Spend twenty minutes learning that each transition declares the relationship between two sentences, and that near-synonyms aren't interchangeable, and you can claw back a question or two that you'd swear you were getting right.
A rough two-week skeleton
Adjust the dosage to your actual timeline — compress it for one week, gut it to the essentials for three days — but the shape holds.
Week one: diagnose and patch
- Day 1. Take one full, honest, timed practice test in the official Bluebook app. Real conditions. No pausing, no phone. This is your map; without it you're just studying in the dark.
- Days 2–4. Grind the grammar and punctuation rules. This is your fastest-moving needle. Mix in short, targeted sets, not full tests.
- Days 5–7. Go back to that first test and work your misses, the slow way described above. Sort them by how they went wrong, not by topic. The category that keeps reappearing is your personal leak.
Week two: rehearse and taper
- Days 8–10. A second timed Bluebook test, then — you guessed it — a thorough review of the misses. Drill your one biggest leak specifically.
- Days 11–12. Practice pacing and triage. Do timed modules where the whole goal is finishing and banking the easy points, not perfection.
- Day 13. Light. Review your own notes on your traps. No new material. Cramming new content this late mostly just rattles you.
- Day 14 (the night before). Stop. Pack your stuff, set two alarms, and go to bed early. Genuinely — see below.
The night before and test-day morning
The most powerful thing you can do the night before the SAT is profoundly boring: sleep. A tired brain is a slower, leakier brain, and sleep is when everything you practiced actually consolidates. A real night's rest will do more for your score than the extra two hours of cramming you're tempted to do instead. On test morning: eat something, get there early, and remember that anxiety is the enemy that quietly eats the working memory you need to think.
