SAT Math draws from four buckets: Algebra (~35%), Advanced Math (~35%), Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (~15%), and Geometry & Trig (~15%). Because it's a closed set, improving is a targeting problem, not a mystery: find the two or three topics you actually miss, learn them properly, then stop the careless and pacing errors that cost points on questions you already know. Reading is hard to raise because there's no syllabus for it. Math is the opposite: the College Board tells you exactly what's on it, and it's a short list. Everything on the SAT math section comes from four buckets: Algebra (linear equations and systems), Advanced Math (quadratics, exponentials, functions), Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (percentages, ratios, statistics, reading graphs), and Geometry and Trigonometry (angles, circles, right triangles). Math has a syllabus. Reading doesn't. That's why math is the fastest section to move once you find the two topics that are leaking.
Step 1: find your two or three weak topics
A student stuck in the 500s or low 600s on math is almost never evenly weak. They're solid on most of it and quietly losing points to a couple of specific topics, systems of equations, or exponential functions, or circle theorems, that they never fully nailed. Because the section is a closed set, you can find these precisely: sort your missed questions by topic and the pattern jumps out. Then, unlike reading, the fix is real content you can just learn. Missing quadratics? Learn quadratics. The points come back.
And half the hard ones have a shortcut. Graph it in Desmos, read the intersection, skip the algebra. Work smarter.

Step 2: kill the careless errors
The other half of most students' missing math points isn't hard topics at all, it's slips: a sign error, a misread "which is NOT," solving for x when they wanted x+2, fumbling the calculator under time pressure. These feel trivial, which is exactly why they're expensive, you had the points and gave them back.
"Careless" isn't a personality trait, it's an untrained habit. Build one check, do it every time, and half your silly mistakes disappear.
Coach is right that "be more careful" is not a plan. A specific, repeatable check is: after you solve, glance back at what the question actually asked, and sanity-check the answer's size before you commit. If your slips cluster (say, you keep answering the wrong quantity), build the check around that one thing.
Reading fights you because there's no content to learn, just habits to retrain. Math is content plus habits, and both are trainable on a schedule. If your score is being held down by math, that's oddly good news: it's the section where "study the specific weak topic" actually works, and where careless-error work pays off fastest.
What to do this week
Take your last math section and sort every miss two ways. First by topic (algebra, advanced, data, geometry): the one or two that show up most are your content gaps, and you'll spend the week actually learning them. Second by cause (didn't know it vs. knew it and slipped): the slip pile is your fastest points, so build one check for your most common careless error. Two lists, a clear week of work, and no more "I'm just bad at math."
