A 1600 means two perfect sections, and on most forms that allows for essentially no misses. So a 1600 is not a knowledge project; by the time you're in range, you know the material. It's a consistency project: eliminate careless slips, master the hardest tier of questions, and build a process steady enough to hold under pressure. And be honest about whether the jump from a 1550 is worth the hours, because for most goals it isn't.
Start with the arithmetic, because it reframes everything. A 1600 is an 800 in Reading and Writing and an 800 in Math, and on most forms the margin for an 800 is tiny: a mistake or two, sometimes none, before the section drops to a 790 or lower. That means a 1600 run is a run with almost no errors of any kind. Not "answered the hard questions." Almost none, on anything.
A 1600 isn't a harder test. It's the same test with the margin for error deleted.
This is why the advice for a 1600 is almost the opposite of the advice for a 1300. Getting to a 1300 is about learning more. Getting to a 1600 is about losing nothing, which is a different and much fussier skill.
The two things that stop a 1600
Students in the high 1500s almost never miss because they hit a wall of material they don't understand. They miss for two reasons:
- A careless slip. One misread word, one sign error, one bubble off by one. At a 1300 this vanishes into the noise. At a 1600 it is the difference, because there's no other error to hide behind.
- The single nastiest question. The one built with a genuine twist, an extra step, a trap that survives careful reading. There might be one per section, and at this level it's the whole ballgame.
A 1600 is not the smartest transcript in the room. It's the one that made no unforced errors. The court is unmoved by talent.

Drive careless errors to genuine zero
Track every miss for a few weeks and split them into "didn't know" and "knew it, blew it." At this level the second pile is almost all of them. Build a specific, repeatable check for the exact slip you make most, whether that's re-reading the question stem or verifying a sign before you commit. "Be more careful" is not a plan. A checklist is.
The last question in each section is where 1600s are won and lost. Learn its favorite tricks and it stops being scary.
Hunt the hardest tier on purpose
Do sets of hard-only questions, reviewed not for the answer but for the twist, until the top-difficulty items start to feel familiar instead of ambushing you. This is the one place where more practice genuinely helps, as long as it's aimed at the frontier and nothing else.
Make your process bulletproof
A 1600 has no slack for a shaky moment, so your method has to survive adrenaline. Same reading order, same checks, every module, so that test-day nerves change nothing about how you work. Consistency under pressure is the actual final skill.
For almost every college goal, a 1550 and a 1600 are the same score. The jump can cost dozens of hours for a difference no admissions office weighs. Chase the 1600 if the challenge itself is the point, or if you genuinely need it. Otherwise, bank the 1550 and spend those hours somewhere they'll actually move an application.
