Everyone knows about the Bluebook practice tests, the four to six full-length official exams in the College Board's testing app. Far fewer students know that the College Board also publishes a separate Question Bank: a searchable library of real, retired SAT questions you can filter down to a single skill. It's the single most underused resource in digital SAT prep.
Full tests tell you what's wrong. The Question Bank lets you drill only that. Different tools, different jobs.
What it actually is
The Question Bank is a filterable collection of official practice questions covering both sections. You choose the section, then narrow by domain and skill, and by difficulty (easy, medium, hard). So instead of taking another full test to see three transition questions, you can pull twenty transition questions and work only those. Every question is real College Board material, which matters more than it sounds: official questions are calibrated and phrased exactly like the test, and third-party questions, however good, never quite match the flavor.
The source matters. Official questions are the standard the test is graded against. Everything else is a witness; this is the record.
Judge Strix is making the point that quality of practice questions isn't a small thing. The traps, the phrasing, the way a hard question hides its twist, these are consistent across official questions and only approximated by prep companies. When you're training to recognize the test's patterns, you want the actual patterns.
How to use it well
Drill your weak skill, not everything
The Question Bank is wasted if you just do random questions. Its whole value is targeting: once a practice test or diagnostic tells you your weak skill, go to the bank, filter to exactly that skill, and work a focused set until the pattern clicks. That's a completely different and far more efficient activity than "do more questions."
Climb the difficulty ladder
Because you can filter by difficulty, do a skill at medium until it's solid, then switch to hard-only and study the twist that makes those questions hard. The hardest tier is where most of your remaining points on a skill live, and the bank lets you practice nothing but that.
Review for the decision, not the answer
The bank shows explanations, but reading "the answer is C" changes little. Reconstruct where you went wrong, what the question was really asking, why the trap was tempting, and write that down. The bank is a supply of raw material; the review is where the learning happens.
They do different jobs, so use both. Full practice tests diagnose (where are my points leaking?) and rehearse (stamina, pacing, the real interface). The Question Bank treats (drill the specific weak skill the test exposed). Taking test after test without targeted drilling in between is why so many students plateau, they keep measuring the problem instead of fixing it.
What to do this week
Don't open the Question Bank cold and grind random questions, that wastes its one superpower. First, find your weakest skill from a recent test or a diagnostic. Then go to the bank, filter to that skill at your level, and do a focused set every day this week, reviewed for the decision each time. One skill, official questions, deliberate review. That's the whole method.
