You read a sketch, work out the length or count it needs using similar triangles, the Pythagorean theorem, circumference, area, or right-triangle trigonometry, then buy the cheapest piece of stock that reaches. It is the skill the SAT tests: name the figure, run the formula, and hold the points on the last step.
Each job runs in three steps. First, survey the sketch and decide whether the marked measurements are enough to size the piece; if one is missing, send the surveyor to fetch exactly the measurement the formula needs, since a wrong request costs gold. Second, work the size and type the length, area, or count the job calls for. Third, provision by buying the cheapest stock that meets or beats your number. Come up short and the build falls; overbuy and the extra length is gold wasted. Eight jobs make a contract, and the closing ledger shows which figures you sized right on the first try.

No, a calculator is optional. The numbers are kept clean: the Pythagorean jobs use whole-number triples, the circle jobs use 3.14 for pi, and each size comes out to a whole number you can check on scratch paper.
